Learn About Gluten in the Food Processing Industry
I wanted to share this article and its website, www.aboutgrain.com, because it has multiple articles about gluten in the food processing industry.
It’s difficult to know if you are allergic to gluten. There are medical tests for this however the cost may be outside your budget. One way to unofficially test is just to go for 60 or 90 days without any gluten in your diet.
I know its a challenge but it can be done. Treat it as if it was your latest “diet plan”. It costs no extra money through wise shopping. It does cost you extra time in reading and researching the meaning of the information contained in the food labels and packaging.
If your abdomen size decreases, you feel better, don’t experience any of the possible symptoms that gluten can cause, then pay attention to it. Your body is trying to send you a message! The odds are that you have a gluten intolerance or you’re allergic. Discuss your findings with your physician and see if he notices a difference upon physical examination. Who knows maybe you can stop taking your over the counter or prescription medication for your gastrointestinal issues. Those that have been diagnosed with celiac disease or other forms of gluten intolerance sometimes may have a hard time finding foods that are free of gluten. It’s not that there aren’t any options, but the problem is that even foods where gluten should naturally be absent still use it somewhere in the food processing environment.
To understand what is gluten and why it makes it into so many different foods, we have to take a look at what it is, what makes it so desirable in the food industry and what are the different stages of gluten usage – from main ingredient to a substance that is nothing more than a contaminant.
“Natural” or “All Natural” Misleading Food Labels
When you see the word “Natural” or “All Natural” on any food labels a red flag should be raised in your mind. The ingredients of any product using “Natural” or “All Natural” should be closely examined.
Why are “Natural” or “All Natural” Misleading Food Labels?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has no standards or definitions as to what is a “natural” food. (Compare that to the detailed standards of what is an “organic” food and you’ll see it is the difference between night and day.)
With the lack of any standards, companies just come up with their own definition that fits their marketing plans. Moreover, the terms “natural” and “all natural” are used on food labels to confuse the consumer into thinking that the food is organic. Reality is that “natural” foods are far from organic standards, courtesy of the agricultural bio tech companies (i.e., Monsanto, Dow AgroSciences) and the food processing industry.
As the Cornucopia Institute (2011) stated:
…[T]he farms and processing plants that produce ingredients for “natural” foods are not prohibited by law from using dangerous pesticides, genetically engineered crops, fumigants, solvents and toxic processing aids. These agricultural and manufacturing inputs are not required by law to be listed on ingredient labels.
Misrepresentation, Deceptive “Cancer” Within the Food Processing Industry
The Cornucopia Institute sent several “all natural” and “natural” labeled cereals to an independent research facility for analysis to see whether the claims were accurate. The results were shocking. Kashi “Go Lean” found 100% GMO soy in the cereal. Kix Cereal, advertised as “All Natural Corn” had 56% of its corn content GMO corn. Barbara’s Puffins cereal, touting a label “All natural since 1971” migrated from being organic to primarily genetically engineered. There were similar findings for other “all natural” and “natural” cereals and granolas. (Click here for report by Rodale, “11 Natural Cereals That Aren’t”)
Even Monsanto, the company that is at the forefront of genetically modifying the food supply, defines on its corporate website “Gentically Modified Organisms (GMO):
Plants or animals that have had their genetic makeup altered to exhibit traits that are not naturally theirs. In general, genes are taken (copied) from one organism that shows a desired trait and transferred into the genetic code of another organism.
So do you think these industry food labeling practices amount to misrepresentation, fraud, products liability or unfair and deceptive trade practices?
Some consumers think so and have started suing companies in class action suits. Frito-Lay (owned by PepsiCo) was sued for misrepresentation, unfair trade and products liability regarding most of their food products. Similar lawsuits have been filed regarding misleading “all natural” food label claims against Kraft, Kellogg and ConAgra.
I do not blame these consumers. Since government fails to address these abuses, then maybe more class action lawsuits need to be filed against these companies. If they are going to use the term “natural” on their food labels then it should convey that the food product is free of “unnatural” ingredients, such as GMOs and pesticide residues. Additionally the Cornucopia Institute noted these so called “natural” products “are not protected from toxic fumigants used on crops in storage, and toxic solvents used during processing.”
Fight Back & Improve Your Health
Until the government becomes pro-consumer on this issue, you should:
1. When buying processed food, if the ingredients do not use the term “organic” and has soy, corn, cottonseed oil, canola, refined sugar, sugar beets, crookneck squash, papaya or zucchini, assume GMO seeds were used.
2. Look for foods labeled organic, GMO free or non-GMO. You can’t assume and trust these days anymore that things are by their marketing presentation. IT MUST BE ON THE FOOD LABEL OR ON CONTAINED IN A WRITTEN DOCUMENT (i.e. Thrive’s written allergen and product details report) OR IT IS NOT ORGANIC, GMO FREE OR NON-GMO. This is the only means we have left to hold food manufacturers accountable for what you put inside your body.
3. Buy meats in which the animal was not given the bovine growth hormone.
4. Buy dairy products that are rBGH and rbst free.
5. Stop patronizing food processing manufacturers that use GMOs, have pesticide residues or use fumigants, solvents or toxic processing aids.

Since posting this page, Dr. Mercola, published his own analysis of the situation. You should read it. It confirms everything I wrote and more.
My questions to you:
Do you desire to be healthy or want to keep you and your family’s health?
Do you want to spend less money on health care in the long run?
Do you want the best quality of life?
Why would you pay someone or some company your hard earned money for food that puts you at risk and potentially is damaging to your health?
These companies giving us all of these GMOs, putting neurotoxins or excitotoxins in their processed food (to improve their taste and get us “addicted” so they’ll have more sales) will not be there when we suffer with all numerous serious health conditions and the aftermath. They also will not be paying your medical bills or watching your savings erode (the financial struggles) trying to treat your illness.
No, they have already laughed their way to their bank. If you try to sue them, they’ll claim: (1) Caveat emptor (meaning “buyer beware”); and (2) You can’t prove that they were responsible since so many other food items you bought were contaminated.
The way to win is minimize your risk. Don’t buy their food! When you buy their food you’re subsidizing socially irresponsible conduct. When you don’t buy their food, you let them accept their just fate. If enough people did this, these companies will either change their ways or go out of business.
It is really simple. We have the power. It only takes a small percentage of people to vote with their dollars to get the job done. We know the economy is challenged. These companies are more vulnerable financially than you are. If they lose a small percentage of business it means either selling their company, shutting it down or filing for bankruptcy protection.
